Few actually know what indie music is, or where it comes from. The term “indie” is a shortened version of “independent” which references the artist(s) recording label. Much like independent films, “indie” music has private financial backing, free from the tethers of big-name labels or its subsidiaries. This allows the creative juices to flow unhindered from the artist(s), making for some of the best – and at times most abstract – music you may find. Because of this, even mainstream artists have adopted this “indie” style themselves, but make no mistake, they had to start somewhere – most likely with an independent label. Music streaming sites like Apple Music, Spotify, SoundCloud, and Pandora serve as an outlet for many of these artists, who you may hopefully stumble upon one day! So, without further ado, I present to you some of the best looking hallmarks in the “indie” music industry. If there’s an artist you didn’t see on the list who you thought should have been there, drop a line in the comments below!
